VIRUS IMAGES
*Please remember that sites which provide images of viruses are often technical and can be hard to understand.  You will find Latin and/or medical names and unfamiliar terminology.  Don't be discouraged since many of the books on diseases and viruses have virus images.  Use the sites listed below to obtain an image of your virus not to obtain information about the virus.  If you locate an image  on a web site,  please show it to Mr. Altorfer to make sure you have identified it correctly.
Access Excellence National Health Museum - offers images of the HIV virus and a link to a gallery of other images including the influenza and adenovirus. The Big Picture Book of Viruses - provides a large number of viral images. Click on the appropriate letter for your virus under the Thumb Index for Virus Names.  The virus name is given with the name of its viral family.  When you click on the viral family, you will get an image of that virus and links to other sites about that viral family.  Use caution in selecting the appropriate virus name.
CELLS alive! - Animated pictures of microbes, bacteria, and viruses.  Check out the Cell Gallery to find an image.  If you decide to use Search window, make sure to use the option to search cellsalive.com!  ICTVdb - Picture Gallery - this is a site fromm the Research School of Biological Sciences from the Australian National University.  It provides a picture gallery of viral images which are listed according to their scientific name.  The explanations with the image are very technical.
Queen's University of Belfast -  the Department of Veterinary Science at this University offers a number of electron micrograph images of animal viruses including herpes and influenza. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine - University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine provides images of over 20 viruses ranging from Ebola to Influenza to Poliovirus.
Virus Ultra Structure - a collection of  viral images from Linda Stannard, Ph.D. of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Cape Town.  The site "is designed as an introductory manual for students of virology."  There are explanations of virus architecture and electron microscopy along with the images of DNA-containing viruses and RNA-containing viruses.
Wadsworth Center - New York Department of Health - provides images of the herpes and rabies virus among others. Welcome to the Electron Microscopy Gallery - Dennis Kunkel, Ph.D., a noted photomicrographer, provides a large image catalog. Select Search the Image Library.
