Biographies of Suffragists
Brief biographical sketches of the leaders of the suffragist movement prepared by Mary M. Huth, Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, University of Rochester Libraries.
Biographies The University of Groningen provides an online textbook of United States history.  The biographies section offers some detailed articles on a long list of people related to American history from John Adams to Geronimo to Woodrow Wilson.
Biography.com This commercial website, from the A&E television network, features information on 25,000 personalities.  The site provides biographical information, video clips and related websites for the individuals listed.  Enter your subject's name in the search window at the top of the homepage.
Biography.com celebrates Black History Month Detailed biographies of Black Americans from the A&E Television Network Biography series. 
Black History Month There are sixty biographies of notable Black Americans at this Gale Group website along with a timeline and links for additional information on Black History.  The information comes from the Gale Group's publications and includes listings of awards and sources for further reading.
The Britannica Guide to Black History  Brief biographies of notable Black Americans.  Each biography includes a photograph or drawing of the individual and a bibliography.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage The Gale Group provides biographies of fifty notable Hispanic women and men.  In addition, the site has a timeline covering 500 years of Hispanic American history, information on celebrations and holidays and an extensive music section.
Chicana Studies Romelia Salinas has provided links to information on various notable Hispanic American women.  You will find artist Frida Kahlo, performers Gloria Estefan and Selena, along with NASA astronaut, Ellen Ochoa.
Distinguished Women of Past and Present Danuta Bois created this site when she realized the contributions by women in culture had been overlooked.  Women who have made contributions in the fields of science, education, government, civil rights, artists, and entertainers are featured.  Select Search by name on the home page.
Famous Hispanics in the World and History Short biographies of over two hundred famous Hispanics.  This site is under construction and biographies are not available for all the names listed.
 Gallery of Achievers The Academy of Achievement presents information on individuals who have impacted the twentieth century in the areas of public service, the arts, science, business, and sports.  An interview, profile, and biography are provided for each individual.
Historical Figures by Women in History Women in History is a nonprofit organization which provides actresses portraying various notable American women to various school and community groups.  Their web site provides fact sheets on the women that are portrayed.  Biographical, accomplishments, education, recommended books and web sites along with a photograph or drawing are provided in the fact sheets.
 History Channel Website of the History Channel which provides articles on people, places and events throughout history.  In addition, there are sections on great speeches, this day in history and feature stories.  Enter your subject's last name, first name in the Search by Keyword window.
 Infoplease Biography A commercial site from the Learning Network and the publishers of the Informationplease almanac.  It provides very brief information on the individual from their encyclopedia, dictionary, and specialized almanacs.  Enter your subject's name in the search window in the center of the homepage.
Institute of African American Studies at the University of Georgia Brief biographical sketches of key figures in African American history.
Las mujeres Detailed biographies of over twenty noted Hispanic women including author Isabel Allende and artist Frida Kahlo.
Lives, the Biography Resource A site which calls itself "the largest guide to biography sites on the Web."  It contains links to thousands of biographies along with diaries, letters, and autobiographies. It only includes biographies of people who are no longer living with few exceptions. You will find links to sites which give in depth information.  You will not find links to short biographical dictionary entries or to sites for living rock, soap, or movie stars. Click on the letter which starts your subject's last name under individuals on the first page. Avoid using the search feature.
Lucidcafe While the primary purpose of this website is to serve cafe and coffee lovers, it maintains an excellent biography archive where you can find a biography of your subject along with suggested websites and videos, books by and about the subject.

These sites have been selected for their relevance to the sixth grade social studies curriculum.  These choices are consistent with the selection policies of the library, and with the print and non-print materials available there.  Each site has been seen by the librarian and has been screened by the school's Internet filtering software.  However, the library, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and the Board of Education are not responsible for the content of these sites, which is subject to frequent change, nor for the content of any other sites to which these sites may be linked.
